Craft: A Single Bed Blanket

You can take a look at all my craft projects at my blog In Ashleigh’s Craft Basket

Hello crafters.  I’m not here to advertise specific yarns, so when you make this for yourself, just use whichever yarn, whichever stitch and whichever size needle suits you.

I am knitting with Garter Stitch, with 5mm bamboo knitting needles.  I am using whichever wool I can get from the farmers market (because it is cheaper than in the shop).

Here is the rough idea for the single bed blanket.  I was going to make a queen size blanket, but decided maybe that was a little too ambitious for my very first knitting project.

I am busy working on my first rectangle, and for this one I am using a pink wool.

You can see the colour I am using in the picture below.  At the time of writing this, the strip measured 79cm.

This is going to be a long project.  I’d love to know if anyone would be willing to do it with me.  My aim from now on is to do 1 rectangle a week.

  1. What a beautiful pink! I too am knitting a blanket. It's the biggest knitting project I've ever attempted. I'm using a simple wave pattern (found here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/zig-zag-afghan-throw You may have to log in to view it, but registration is free). I re-arranged the size and number of stripes to accommodate the yarn I have (acrylic yarn that was given me)...beautiful fall colors! I was thinking I'd like to knit a wool blanket afterwards to fit our queen sized bed. Maybe when I do I'll follow your pattern. I'd have to buy wool though...how many yards/meters would I need?

Oh, and bamboo needles are my favorite! They aren't as slippery as metal ones (or as heavy!) but the yarn moves over them more freely than plastic ones, in my experience. Best of luck with your project!

    1. Hello Christephi

      Thank you for the comment.

The number of balls of yarn/wool you need really depends on the wool you are using. I've calculated that with the wool I am using it will take roughly 40 balls of wool.

I actually bought bamboo needles because they felt more natural than metal or plastic ones :) But I also love them.
